Howdy y'all!

Howdy y'all!

School is wrapping up quickly and the new semester will start faster than expected, and I was hoping we could all take advantage of the few days we have free of school commitments to make some headway regarding our IMLS project due in May…. Please write back with input so that I can update this and post it on the blog for future reference and modifications. If you guys prefer I can make this into a Google Document so that we can all see things progress… Just let me know… Thanks!

Kits for the Headstart

I liked the bags that the Children's Museum used for the kids. I thing the cost would kill us in the long run. So my second choice would be chose an open style bag like the recycle one's we can purchase for $.50 at Wal Mart. Nice blue or "HPL Red" bags. The bag could/should have a HPL logo on the front. Small kids have trouble with zippers! What do you all think?

We should get together in January and start working hard on this project.

Teens at TLA

YA librarians, save the date!!  TLA's Young Adult Round Table and the 2009 Conference Program Committee will sponsor a very special opportunity for your teens at the 2009 TLA Annual Conference in Houston.  Texas Teens 4 Libraries (TT4L) is an all-day event for teens, scheduled on Thursday, April 2.  TT4L is designed to encourage the active participation of teens in TLA's annual conference, offering them the opportunity to attend programs, visit the Exhibit Hall, talk informally with YA authors, and interact with other Texas young adults who share their interest in reading, technology, and libraries.

Teens who attend TT4L must be sponsored by a TLA librarian who is attending the 2009 annual conference.  As an incentive for attending, TLA has approved a reduced one-day registration fee for teens participating in TT4L.  A special room will be set up for registered teens and their sponsoring librarians, and YA's will be able to meet there to plan their schedule, touch base with their sponsors, meet other teens, and regroup throughout the day.    Teens will be able to visit the Exhibit Hall, as well as attend any regularly scheduled conference session on Thursday.  YART volunteers will be stationed in the TT4L room all day to talk about programming and the Exhibit Hall and to assist teens with questions or concerns about the conference.

A special feature of TT4L is the chance for teens to visit informally with YA authors who are already presenting at the annual conference.  What a great chance for teens and authors to share ideas with each other!

TT4L will also include the first-ever Texas Teens Booktalk 4 All, a session open to all conference attendees,  which features teens booktalking their favorite new titles.  Teens are also encouraged to submit video trailers to be shown as a part of the Texas Teens Booktalk 4 All session.  Beth Yoke, the Executive Director of Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), will moderate this teen program which will include the chance for teens  to share their candid views on reading, YA literature, and graphic novels with attending librarians.  What a great way to hear about current YA titles from a teen's perspective!

A committee of librarians from across the state has been planning TT4L since late spring 2008.  Members of YART's Texas Teens Read Advisory Committee (TTRAC) have also been involved in the planning process.  The TT4L Planning Committee is chaired by 2009 Conference Program Committee members Susi Parks Grissom, 2008-2009 YART Past Chair and Dallas ISD school librarian, and WyLaina Hildreth, former member of  TTRAC and currently Youth Librarian with the Denton Public Library.

YART members will receive more TT4L details over the next few months, including ways to find funding for your teens to attend the conference.   For now, talk with your teens to encourage their attendance at this special TLA day for teens and their participation in the Texas Teens Booktalk 4 All session. Questions?  Contact Susi Parks Grissom at susi.grissom@sbcglobal.net  for more information about this great opportunity for Texas teens.

Children's Festival Authors

Hey guys. I was looking at the TLA website, and it looks like they won't post the authors who will be there until Feb. 2009. Didn't Rose say there's someone we can contact to find out who's going to be at TLA?

I thought maybe we could brainstorm a list of authors who we'd like to get.
I was thinking maybe the brother and sister (or one of the two) who writes the Babymouse graphic novel would be good. Here's the website with contact info for Jennifer Holm: http://www.jenniferholm.com/01_aboutme/01_overview.html
and Matthew Holm: http://www.matthewholm.net/

later!

Scope of Assignments

Greetings, all! I just wanted to share that I'll be glad to work on both projects: look forward to getting my assignments. Here are some tasks that I could fulfill pretty easily:

-writing invitation letters to authors for the children's festival
-requesting 'in-kind' donations for the Head Start Literacy Kits
-word processing/design of training materials for the Head Start Literacy Kits

That's it for now, peace.

Welcome HPL IMLS Scholars... and friends....

This is the make-shift blog for the Houston Public Library - IMLS Scholar's Blog.

In this blog we can keep track of current projects as well as an any questions that may come about.

Anticipated Projects (as discussed in Salt Lake City)

  • Children's Festival @ HPL
  • Kits for Headstart Centers

In order to fully comply with our scholarship requirements we have brainstormed a bit in Salt Lake City. The above listed ideas were a result of our compiled comments. As a whole the projects should be completed with paperwork submitted by May 2009, which means we should begin thinking about what to do.... Time to go... more updates later.
